How to Care for Your Woven Goods
LET’S BE HONEST
Wool’s GOT A REPUTATION.
Fine woolen goods often get put into the high maintenance category. While it’s true, there are a few extra rules to caring for them, it’s really not hard to keep them looking fresh. With just a few quick tips, you’ll see that sustainable, ethical wool textiles will still be keeping you cozy a hundred years from now.
Throw Some Shade
Like all things, UV light will degrade wool over time, fading the color and making them dry and brittle. This doesn’t mean you have to save them for “special occasions.” Just don’t keep them near a bright window.
2. Hand Wash, but Don’t Sweat
Wool has an amazing ability to reject dust and dirt. If absolutely necessary you can easily wash them by hand. Find the instructions in this public Google doc entitled How to Wash Tupelo Fiber Goods
3. Stage a Moth Intervention
Moths want your wool and silk. Cut off their supply of that sweet, sweet sheep crack by storing woven textiles in a tape sealed paper bag with my Lavender Air Freshener Sachet or some cedar chips. Place in a cool spot with good airflow.
4. Mend if Necessary
Woven textiles rarely need mending. But, when disaster strikes I recommend finding a local fiber artist to repair your textile. It’s eco-conscious, and it can be nearly invisible or it can add artistic character.
